Elevator Etiquette

Today I yelled at a group of people in the elevator:

"Are you gonna fucking go out or not? P.I."

A group of people from one call center in the same building as ours took
that from me. They seriously need to learn elevator etiquette. The moment
they stepped into the elevator, my ears started to heat up and I was
beginning to fume with anger.

How could I not? Most of them (about 10 or so people) were talking on top of
their lungs - everyone at the same time. I decided to just let it pass and
not let their noise ruin the rest of my day.

When the elevator stopped on the smoking floor (our - my colleague Will and
I - stop), the noisy un-cultured people with no sense of elevator etiquette
and breeding - were blocking our way out of the elevator.

We made several attempts at calling their attention and telling them to let
us through, but they were all too engrossed in conversation about whether
they should get off on that floor or the ground floor.

The elevator doors were almost closing and I was already so annoyed and mad
that I wasn't able to help myself from yelling at them:

"Are you gonna fucking go out or not?"

Like the Red Sea, they parted and made a way for us. I was so pissed and I
wanted to give them a lecture on elevator etiquette and etiquette in
general. But all I could muster was:

"Put*ng ***"

That felt good. I may have lost my "breeding" and "culture" after screaming
at them, but I don't care.

I walked away from the elevator smiling.

"Bakla Ako, May Reklamo?" (and most of the other blogs under The Bakla Blogs Network) was inaccessible in the past few weeks. We have had some problems with our server and I was sick, so that was just too much for me to handle.

I was down with the flu for more than week, but now I'm feeling better. And as if they're completely connected, my blogs were also down. I noticed this last week and the previous times (like months ago) when Bakla Ako was also down while I was sick.

We apologize for the inconvenience this caused (in whatever way possible), and we thank you all for your continued support!

This week is a fierce competition and I'm actually not expecting to win since I'm up against very prolific and well-known bloggers. There's my friend The Bakla Review, The (HOT) Vegan Prince, and Lezfriendly. So I will not be campaigning and asking you to support Bakla Ako, May Reklamo, I'll leave it up to you. Besides, I myself can't even decide who to vote for. Charing.

One thing I can say though is that I'm quite happy with how the Rainbow Bloggers Philippines is turning out. Kudos to the original parrots who came up with this idea.

Also, the current influx of members and readers is a good sign that we can make it happen! I have high hopes that for this year's Pride March, we will have a better (read: more people in the contingent) representation under the Rainbow Bloggers and Friends Banner!

Now that we have more members and more people know about us, we can definitely be there and join the Pride March in December!

Guys4men+PlanetRomeo: Are You Happy About It?

Guys4men has finally merged with PlanetRomeo and there are mixed reactions from the users of what used to be guys4men. I have, however, seen more dissonance than appreciation of this change. And I can relate to many of those who think that selling merging guys4men with PlanetRomeo was a bad idea. Long before this merger, I already had accounts with both g4m and planetromeo/gayromeo so I'm already used to the interfaces and platforms of both networks. Honestly though, I still prefer the old guys4men interface.

Prior to the merge, Guys4men was the premier social networking site for gay men in the Philippines. But now, I'm not sure if the users are all too happy about Planetromeo.

There are quite a number of reasons why users of guys4men are not so amenable to this change, so let me name some of them based on my own observations:

Interface
The old guys4men was simple, neat and very user-friendly. While it is true that is may be difficult to deal with a change like this; switching from clean and white to a sort of cluttered blue, black and yellow and orange may take a LOT of getting used to. PlanetRomeo's interface is actually customizable to suit one's needs. But if you're already used to seeing the plain white and clean g4m interface, you wouldn't really appreciate going through leaps and bounds just to make the page feel like "home".

Chat
Guys4Men chat is probably one of the most missed functionalities of the site. The webcam chat application (powered by Userplane) was almost always full (and with many Pinoys) reaching points of more than 300 concurrent users (Lobby 1, Lobby 2, Lobby 3, and other rooms being occupied simultaenously). The interaction was live and real and more. Guys in various states of undress, dress, and duress! (the room is still accessible though, if you have the correct link - check your browser's history)

Forums
The guys4men forums is perhaps the most missed among all the features of 4m. It was were users could discuss anything and everything under the gay and not-so-gay sun! Threads and threads of GA (Guy Above - Is GA top, bottom, versa, versabottom, power bottom, power top?), clan meet-ups, movie discussions, sex and health, parties, friendships, etc. - all down the drain as PlanetRomeo does not really have forums (they have clubs, but uhm? ok).

I'm sure there are more reasons aside from the ones I mentioned above. Then again, people still have their own choice: stay or go. If they're willing to embrace change and forget about the old guys4men, then they can stay. If they aren't then they can go.

Besides, there's always Pinoyg4m (I highly reccommend this site ! Will post about them soon), Downelink, Manjam, Gay.com, Gaydar, Dlist, DestinationMale, Connexion, Manhunt, DudesNude Fridae and a whole lot more!

So is this an end of an era?

The NoH8 Project on Tumblr

I started noticing a lot of people posting their NoH8 photos on Tumblr

earlier today. So what I did was to reblog all NoH8 photos I saw on Tumblr. And I did that through the new Tumblr blog I created: The NoH8 Project on Tumblr.

And boy are Tumblrs fast! The blog now has a total of 37 Tumblr followers and we have been receiving quite a number of contributions. Thank you!

And even though I am not from California (Im not even in the United States - Im in the Philippines, and Im not even American!), I believe in this campaign. I have been following news and updates about Prop8 for as long as I can remember. I believe in a cause like this. I believe that no matter where you are in the world, no matter what race, color, religion, or sexual orientation you have, hate (H8) is never a good thing.

The predominantly Catholic nation of the Philippines is still worlds away from gay marriage or marriage equality, but it does not mean that the LGBT Community and our friends here do not have something to fight for. Believe it or not, we still do not have laws that protect the basic rights of members of the LGBT community.

What we are fighting for now is the enactment of the Anti-Discrimination Bill, which has been a bill for almost a decade now. I believe that a campaign similar to NoH8 can be done here and I really hope we can do something to further our cause and our call for EQUAL (not special) rights.

Singapore International Film Fest Features Pinoy Films

The 22nd Singapore International Film Festival will take place on April 14 to April 19, 2009 and a few Filipino films will be featured: Aureus Solitos Boy, Francis Xavier Pasions Jay, Roxlees Cesar Asar and Lav Diazs Melancholia.

BOY

Boy is a coming-of-age story about a boy who falls in love with a macho dancer:

A young budding poet, who is unnamed, observes lip-synching drag-queens and dancing rent-boys in a gay bar one evening and finds himself attracted to Aries, who comes from a poorer part of town. Selling his action heroes and comic books so as to be able to afford Aries for one night, he buys Aries at the bar and brings him home for the new year. Sparks fly while celebratory fireworks go off outside the house and the boys forge a fragile connection that neither of them is certain will last. This is an idealistic, coming-of-age tale of a sensitive boy who arrives at his first lesson about love and who learns to grow confidently into his own sexuality.

Boy is a finalist for the Asian Feature Film Competition.

Cinema Today is a section of the festival about films of today that will become tomorrows classics. From drama to comedy to documentaries, presenting the realities of today in this scope of films by some of the most watched filmmakers. The following Filipino films are featured:

This new Jay convinces the family to let them shoot the dead mans wake and funeral for a reality show, even up till the moment when the murderer is found. The plan goes so well that even the grieving mother is willing to redo the scene when she first confronts her sons corpse. Director Francis Xavier Pasion explodes the gap between onscreen reality and real-life in this debut feature, which critiques sensationalist journalism by revealing what is entailed in the making of a documentary. The truth is never quite what it seems. Jay took the Best Film and Best Actor prizes at the Cinemalaya Film Festival.

Cesar Asar

Cesar and dim-witted George are best friends who manage to survive in the throes of poverty in this offbeat comedy.

George Boy was born late, hence he is slow in the head. Because he is the only student left in his class after no one can afford to go to school, he is named valedictorian. His uncle, who bullies him into singing a song about Kangkong in an International Language (ie. English), is striving to be an attorney. Cesar Asar is Georges best friend whose parents are working as illegal immigrants in the States. Cesar cracks jokes about how supermarkets vendors hands get swollen from changing the price tags on food products due to continual inflation, while George Boy soon disappears illegally to Saudi to find work and help his uncle. This surreal and self-mocking film pokes cruel fun at an aspect of the Philippines that has failed to rise above its poverty.

Imagine is another section of the festival: Step into this section if you want to experience the possibilities of cinema. Thought provoking, surrealistic and genre-defying, the eight films presented is an invitation to adventurous cineasts to discover the new frontiers of cinema. Melancholia by Lav Diaz is one of the featured films.

Melancholia

The great independent auteur Lav Diazs latest epic explores the devastating emotional consequences of political oppression in the Philippines.

The burden of their role-playing can only lead to madness. The second chapter takes place in Manila, where two survivors from Sagada try to pick up the pieces of their lives with mixed results. In the final section, we are plunged back in time to the jungle, with three leftist guerrillas scrambling to escape government troops. Like all of Diazs films, life unfolds in real-time, but the details are rarely banal - every moment counts, the atmosphere is hypnotic and the images often breathtaking. The space he gives his characters (and performers) gradually accumulates into powerful sense of a national tragedy.

Internet Addiciton

Ever since I discovered the Internet (more than a decade ago), I have been hooked to it. I could never live a day without being online - even if I didn't really have anything important to go online for.

I realized that the addiction was real just like my addiction to cigarettes. Then lately, I found myself busy reading books.

It's such a nice feeling to be able to read books (and actually finish them) again. And in a way, it cured a little bit of my addiction.

Now, whenever I go online, all I do is prioritize the important stuff. Once I'm done with those, I browse here and there a little, then log off. And whenever I'm bored at home, instead of going online, I pick up a book and read until I fall asleep!

There is a cure to Internet addiciton! (at least for now)

My Daniel Hechter Chronograph Timepiece

I don't normally wear watches. One of the reasons is that my wrists are too thin that nothing would fit and another is that I already have my mobile phone (make that three mobile phones) to help me keep track of time.

The most number of watches I have owned at any given time is 3. I lost the other one then the other two were stolen in August 2006, along with my two mobile phones (from inside my apartment, while I was sleeping!).

Now, I own a hand-me-down from my late grandfather, but it's too sporty that I don't dare wear it to work given that I'm almost always in corporate attire.

Recently though, I acquired this beautiful Daniel Hechter chronograph timepiece and boy am I loving it! (Photos after the jump)

Bolivia, a country in South America, has recently passed a new constitution which took effect last February 7, 2009. And that constitution, approved by 61% of the voting population, has provisions that protect members of the LGBT community from discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity:

Article 14.II: In the title "Fundamental Rights and Guarantees': The State prohibits and punishes all forms of discrimination founded on the basis of sex, sin color, gender, age, sexual orientation and gender identity, origin, culture, nationality, citizenship, language, religious beliefs, ideology, political or philosophical affiliation.

Bolivia, like the Philippines, is composed of a great majority of Roman Catholics (95% - source: CIA World Factbook). If Bolivia can do it, why can't we? Why can't we pass the Anti-Discrimination Bill that has been in Congress for a decade now?

According to the Philippine Congress website (which I accessed again on February 24, 2009), the bill is still pending with the Committee on Human Rights and has been that way since 2007-08-01. So it has not moved?

I really hope our dear representatives take some action on this matter and not wait 20 more years before they actually take a look at this bill again. If you are gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans-gendered, or whatever term you like to call yourself, or if you are straight and support this call, I am urging all of you to write or talk to your respective districts congressman/woman (list of members of the House and their contact information) to prioritize the enactment of the Anti-Discrimination Bill. Lets all unite to fight for our rights.
